BETTY PARSONS GALLERY
MODERN PAINTINGS

PLAZA 3-3456

15 EAST 57 STREET
NEW YORK 22, N.Y.

January 7, 1963

Mr. Ad Reinhardt
732 Broadway
New York, N. Y.

Dear Ad:

It is with deep personal disappointment that I have learned that even if I won my case with Sidney Janis, I would never be given the whole floor. You must realize that because of the litigation by Sidney Janis, the status quo is not good enough. Therefore, I have no alternative but to remove myself from this intolerable situation, and as of June 30th, 1963 the Betty Parsons Gallery will no longer be at 15 East 57th Street.

Because moves of necessity involve changes, there are bound to be changes in the structure and composition of a new gallery. I do not know at this moment what kind of space will become available to me, but I doubt that I shall continue exactly as before. The situation forces me to prepare you now for changes and to suggest that you should perhaps seek new gallery associations with exhibition space.

It is unfortunate that matters beyond my control should lead to this dislocation of gallery and artists but I am hoping with all my heart to turn this sad affair into a brighter future. As I have pioneered in the past for freedom of artistic expression and experience, I plan to continue to do so in the future.

As space and plans become more definite, I will keep you posted.

As ever,
Betty
