quality in the niece's holdings (which were appraised by the undersigned for insurance purposes during the recent legal dispute).

Incidentally, there is among the collages at Cirker's Hayes a framed Xerox of a copy of a Matisse drawing made by Robert Cornell which is unfinished, front and back, and should not be offered as the work - joint or otherwise - of Joseph Cornell. I point this out because the estate's reputations will be ill-served if such things are seen by knowledgeable collectors.

Regarding care of the work, I should expect to be responsible for all expenses of exhibition, sales and maintenance. This gallery has always handled storage, transportation, costs of catalogues, photography, advertising and minor restoration of estates it represents. Major restoration should be the responsibility of the estate.

In my experience the duration of a contract or consignment agreement should be five years which will give the gallery an opportunity to demonstrate what it can accomplish. A longer period might not be in the best interests of the estate.

If required, the undersigned would be willing to arrange a bond or guarantee of financial responsibility. The gallery currently has three accounts at the Bank of New York, Madison Avenue at 63rd Street. Any officer of the bank may be questioned about credit standing. Perhaps more to the point would be the opinions of heirs or administrators of the estates of other American artists whose work I handle. The longest running of these contractual arrangements are with The Lachaise Foundation, John B. Pierce Jr., Managing Trustee, c/o Gaston Snow & Ely Bartlett, 82 Devonshire Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02109 (12 years) and Mrs. Monique Storrs Booz, 687 Blackthorn, Winnetka, Illinois 60093, the daughter of John Storrs (six years).

The gallery has had considerable experience in generating or cooperating with museum exhibitions (for instance, the Joseph Stella and Gaston Lachaise shows at the Whitney Museum). I was the organizer of the Lachaise traveling exhibition which has visited innumerable American and Canadian museums in the past six years and is still being scheduled. I was also involved in the organization of the current Lachaise Retrospective (over 100 sculptures plus drawings) which opens this week at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. This show has already been at Cornell and UCLA and will be seen at the Walker Art Center.
