RICHARD ARTSCHWAGER

"Executive Chair" (sculpture in formica) by RICHARD ARTSCHWAGER is one of Artschwager's many non-functional pieces of furniture. He has also made pictureless picture frames, mirrorless mirrors, solid box-like tables with table cloths of inlaid formica, and cabinets behind the sliding doors of which there is no room to place anything. These seem to be parodies on our modern ever-so-sparse furniture the form of which is meant to express function and thus to rid itself of all ornamental superfluities. But Artschwager's furniture is more superfluous than the most elaborate rococo chair, for it is completely useless. Perhaps these works are also the artist's way of saying that man has been brutally alienated from even his most intimate surroundings.
