WINGS December

THE JUNIOR GUILD BOOKS
December

EVERY year an increasing number of Literary Guild members and their friends are discovering what an especially fine Christmas gift membership in the Junior Literary Guild is for the boys and girls of the family. The first book of the membership arrives in time to be put under the Christmas tree or in the Christmas stocking. With it is a card announcing the joyful news that the fortunate boy or girl is to receive a surprise book every month during the coming year, together with a copy of Young Wings, the Junior Guild's magazine. In short, he or she has been made a member of the Boys' and Girls' Own Book Club whose members are to be found upon every continent.
So it is that the December books of the Junior Guild have a special significance, for they are the books which arrive as part of the holiday's celebration.
Six, seven and eight year old Members will receive a gay and delightful picture book, A Day On Skates by Hilda van Stockum. Here are many Dutch pictures in color and many more in black and white. Young children will pore over them and enjoy the story no less. For it is about a winter picnic on skates, with a group of merry Dutch children who have a most zestful day. Hilda van Stockum, the author-artist, gives American boys and girls and appealing and characteristic picture of the boys and girls of her native country. The retail price of A Day On Skates is $2.50
Nine, ten and eleven year old Members will find Dobry by Monica Shannon as their Christmas greeting. Miss Shannon is already known and beloved by thousands of children through her California Fairy Tales. Now she has written in vivid prose the story of a Bulgarian peasant boy who wished to be a sculptor. How Dobry clung to his dream through

the eventful days of his growing years is a story of compelling interest for young readers. Ten full page drawings and thirty small ones are of unusual quality and are by Atanas Katchamakoff, a distinguished Bulgarian artist. The retail price of Dobry is $2.00. Elizabeth Foreman Lewis, the eminent writer for boys and girls to whom the Newberry Medal was awarded in 1933 for her book, Young Fu, has now written the story of a girl in China, Ho-ming, Girl of New China, our December selection for our girl Members of twelve to sixteen years of age. Against an authentic background of life in China today, Mrs. Lewis portrays the story of Ho-ming, eager girl whose ambition has been aroused by the woman doctor of her village. Genuine understanding of girlhood pervades this dramatic story. The retail price of Ho-ming, Girl of New China is $2.00.
Older boy Members-from twelve to sixteen years of age- will receive North After Seals by Thames Williamson, a stirring adventure story certain to delight. There is action a-plenty in every chapter as the young hero pursues his new career. At the same time, Mr. Williamson has drawn for boy readers an accurate picture of a sealing expedition in the far North. The retail price of North After Seals is $2.00.
