My dear Mr. Hayden:

We are sure that you are going to be just as pleased as we are that Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia, has purchased "The Four Master" and "Snug Harbor" which you sent us several months ago to forward to them with a group for their consideration. Word of this purchase just reached us yesterday together with payment for the pictures. The amount of their check was $75.00- "The Four Master" bringing $35.00 and "Snug Harbor", $40.00. The Foundation makes a small charge of ten percent on sales as you will doubtless recall. This has been deducted from the amount and our check for $67.50 is enclosed.

The purchase of these pictures by Spelman College is indeed a forward step in the recognition of the Negro artist by those of his own group. We believe that at Spelman there is but the nucleus of a much larger collection of Negro work and, in addition, that it will bring about sales to other educational institutions throughout the country which have not yet dared take this step.

Six artists are represented in the present sale to Spelman College and ten pieces of work have been purchased through the Foundation. In addition to this, some of Hale Woodruff's paintings have been purchased by the College as well as a piece by one of his students, so you see they really have quite a collection with which to start.

If you have any pieces of work you would like to send us to replace those bought by Spelman, we would be glad to have you tell us about them in your note of acknowledgement of this letter.

Very sincerely yours,

Evelyn S. Brown
