Hospitalized in June at Mount Sinai, New York; undergoes major surgery in October; nearly dies.
Creates group paintings "The Persian and the Spartan" (before hospitalization) during the summer.

Receives commissions to make a large collage for New Stanford Law School building: "In Celebration: Stanford College" and "Hermitage", lithograph in honor of Russian loan show at Knoedler, New York, and various U.S.A. museums.
Paints "In Black and White No. 2", monumental work based on sketches inspired by his "Africa" and "The Spanish Death", a new variation on Elegiac theme. "Robert Motherwell: Retrospective del gran pintor norteamericano", Museo de Arte Moderna, Mexico City. Catalogue by Dore Ashton. Graphics exhibition, Galeria Cervantes, Mexico City. 1976
Early spring paints several very large paintings ("Ancestral Precense, Les Caves No. 2" and "Threatening Presence"), as well as a new "Elegy to the Spanish Republic"; the latter was photographed from beginning to end, as it was painted, by the noted Italian photographer, Dino Pedriali, and will be published with several hundred full-page photos by Editrice Magma, Rome, in 1976.
Executes small painting for the Baron Philippe de Rothschild, to be reproduced on the Mouton-Rothschild wine label: "Les Caves".

Televized interview (with Robert Hughes) by B.B.C., London. Most important show of new paintings in New York City in many years at Knoedler's. Other shows in Texas, California, and Detroit.
Represented in the U.S.A. pavilion at the Venice Bienale.
Commissioned to paint huge mural for new modern art wing (I. M. Pei, architect) of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
Publication scheduled of first large monograph, preface by Bryan Robertson, text by H.H. Arnason, notes by the artist, published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York.
