the church are imitations of the old ones and the carvings on the wood in the choir are satires on the church and state. 

Soon after lunch we arrived at Durham in a thunder storm.

From the railroad the Cathedral and the Castle are plainly seen on the heights above the town, but the river is not visible.

Wednesday morning we went through the Cathedral. It is a very dingy looking building and the oldest Cathedral I have seen. The massiveness of the Norman architecture is very impressive. The doorways are beautiful and most of the church is very old except the windows and the wall behind the altar, which are modern. The piers and columns alternate and the columns have deeply cut designs to relieve the monotony. The rectangular designs give some of them the appearance of leaning. 

The Lady Chapel had been moved to the foot of the church by the superstitious people. It had caved in several times when it was behind the altar and they thought Saint Cuthbert had done it, because he was
