Mr. Gifford Beal,
19 Atlantic Avenue,
Rockport, Massachusetts

Dear Mr Beal:

My attention has recently been called to a number of newspaper articles relative to installation of work done under the Section of Painting and Sculpture in which the mural or sculpture was credited to the Works Progress Administration. You are aware, of course, that the work of the Section of Painting and Sculpture is entirely separate from the Works Progress Administration.

At the time that you install your work I would appreciate your stressing to newspaper reporters, the Postmaster, and other interested parties that the work which you have done for the Section of Painting and Sculpture is a part of the Treasury Department Art Projects. In giving out photographs of works done under the Section they must be accompanied by the line, "Courtesy Treasury Department Art Projects." This will avoid any confusion on the part of the public.

Further, the Post Office Department requires an official authorization from that Department before the artist may install in a Post Office or Court House. For this reason it is necessary for this office to be informed well in advance of the date of actual installation or actual work on the walls in the case of fresco painting. I would appreciate your watching this carefully and notifying this office accordingly so that such authorization may be procured by us and relayed to you.

Cordially yours,
Edward Rowan
