My precious 'lil Emmie --

I'm so glad there is such an instrument as the Telephone and that I was able to talk to you last night for when I received your Special Delivery letter about four thirty my sympathies ran away 
with my clear thinking for a while and I simply couldn't bear the thought of you suffering over anything. It took me a ride in Rock Creek Park and several hours of constantly knowing the truth before I could destroy the belief that anything had happened.
