to work in the country among the farmers, the sick women, and orphan children remained, After some time, the comd of the district, gave me a building, for temporary use,  Last fall I had to give up the building then occupied, I then made application, for the Hospital buildings, which were granted, But the buildings are on land which can not be purchased, and the owners of the land wish the buildings removed, they are of but little value to the Government, I presume if sold would not defray the expenc of sale.  I have to expend two hundred dollars on the building before I could occupy it, it being in two rooms without loft or partitions,  I have been obliged to rent the premises, a small farm, and buildings upon which the hospital buildings are, at fifty dollars per months because I could not find any other place for a home, for these destitute children.

In the fall, when the post at Springfield was being broken up, the Gov issued to me for the orphan children, under my care five months rations, But made no provisions, for destitute women, or colored people, when the winter set in, there was great suffering, among the blacks, helpless women and children were in the same condition, I found the refugees, I could not see these poor creatures, die, and for a time I devided, the rations given me, and clothed them from my own funds, about one month after I had taken up and provided, for several colored
