children, and have succeeded in placing out nearly a hundred, including a number who have been claimed by their fathers and friends, since the close of the war, But what is left are too small to work, and our people are too poor to raise their own children as they should be raised,

There should be a home in our vicinity for colored orphans, and a retreat for old sick women, the country is healthy, an institution of any kind can be supported, there for one fourth, it can be, any where else in MO - I have now at my orphans home, cows fowels hogs sheep and will raise on the farm rented, grain sufficient to feed all I now have and more.

Now what I ask, is, the Government to give the Hospital buildings (so we can have them moved,) and sufficientt money to take care of the children until crops are gethered in the fall, After that time we do believe, our home will not need any further aid, with very little extray expence the colored orphan children could be taken care of and have a home.

Very Respectfully,
Mary Phelps
