Dear Sir
I am very much grieved that you should deem it proper to take one mans word, before that of five of at least equal witnesses.  If you will be so good as to attend, I will state what I can prove to be the facts in the case.  Paris Jackson Richard Jackson, [[strikethrough]] Isacc [[/strikethrough]] Isaac Williams & Henry Louis are the witnesses I can bring.  The last was at the time in question working for William Ray in the same woods.  Eli Briggs, who is the only witness against us, was only working with us four days, and his statement can only be suspicion.  I think it very strange in Miss Amanda Hawly, to be willing to write what she can have no possible way of knowing. 
 
I, Charles Weathers, can prove satisfactoryly all that I have said.  I think if you would take the trouble to ride out to the woods [[strikethrough]] you [[/strikethrough]] or send judges, you could see that all the work done there, could not have been done if, I, with my companions, had been sitting over the fire all the winter, according to Eli's and Miss Amanda's [[strikethrough]] testifies [[/strikethrough]] testimony.  It is true you did not make the contract, but you say you are here to see justice  done to us in all cases, and you must see that some compensation is due us for our winters work.
