Before me personally appeard the undersigned Mary Ella Brown and being duly sworn deposes as follows

My Name is Mary E Brown I live on Shelly Street near South in the City of Memphis Tenn. on the night of the 2" day of May 1866 a party of white men, one of them a policeman came to my house "and asked for arms"  I told them there was a gun there which belonged to my husband who was dead, and who was a discharged soldier, they said "never mind they would search the house" they found my husbands discharged paper & one hundred and eighty dollars in money I had put away with it. I told them I would give them half of it "if they would go away" they told me to "hush or we would kill you" and took away all the money and gun with them, the gun was worth $6.00
