The Howard University Awards for Leadership in Architecture
This program had its inception in September 1979 when The University and the School honored Howard H. Mackey, FAIA for his contributions and dedication to the education of the African American and other architects of color. Since that time, the program has grown to include international dimensions and has recognized 26 men and women on two occasions. The next honors program will coincide with the international Congress in October 1992. MATRIX 1989 Special Edition, attached, describes the most recent formal awards program. Since 1989 the award has been given in individual ceremonies to Ernest Dickerson, a Howard educated architect who is a renowned director, cinematographer, writer, etc. and Jack Travis, editor of African American Architects. Mr. Dickerson, a colleague of Spike Lee's, was the reason that the central character in "Jungle Fever" was an architect and wrote, filmed and directed "Juice." Mr. Travis in addition to editing his book was the architecture consultant on "Jungle Fever."
