Is there an IRA with your name on it?
If you're a married working woman, there's a good chance that the only IRA in you family is your husband's name. But the government allows you to have your own IRA, thereby giving you up to $2,000 of tax-deferred income per year that you can invest in a variety of ways, including mutual funds. We offer five different mutual funds for your retirement program—just in case you'd like to have an IRA with your own name on it.

$2,000 per person tuition (not including travel, room and board, or expenses).
The Foundation for Women's Resources recruited state and city officials, business and community leaders, and other experts to speak at the workshops. Luci Baines Johnson, Southwest Airlines CEO Herb Kelleher, Exxon USA treasurer Carol Tatkon, and state deputy treasurer, Mary Beth Rogers, took part in a panel discussion at the first session. Governor Mark White was the keynote speaker.
The guests didn't hesitate to come out from behind their podiums and confer with workshop participants. Says Ann Richards, "So many of us are still 'the first woman to...' that we continue to function in semi-isolation. Leadership Texas offers connections and shared experiences so that individually we don't have to reinvent the wheel."
The publicity and prestige surrounding the project gave many women a share of local clout. As one participant commented, "It sure doesn't hurt to go home and say, 'When I was talking to Governor White last week...'"
Already Leadership Texas is flexing some muscle on government boards and commissions. Four of the program's alumnae were appointed to the state's new commission on the status of women, one as commissioner chairman. Sharon Brown, senior vice president of First National Bank of Amarillo, was appointed to the state treasury advisory committee, and Judith Smith, administrator of Seton Medical Center, is on the governor's job training and coordination council. Attorney Elna Salinas of Laredo was named 341sts district judge of Texas.
In January Leadership Texas began its second year with 60 new participants. Whether it will produce a governor or a Fortune 500 CEO still remains to be seen. Farmer is optimistic: "There is nothing in Texas that Leadership Texas cannot do or cannot change."
