Trudy Beaman introduces Natural Skin Care from Britain

I invite you to discover fascinating secrets of British complexion beauty... in the form of simple country herbal remedies passed from mother to daughter for generations.
These formulas are now available through Martha Hill, the respected English designer and cosmetician. Her products contain the oils and extracts of age-old natural aids. Avocado, the world's finest cleanser and moisturizer. Cucumber, to cool, and firm up skin with a hormone that fights wrinkles. Sesame oil to penetrate and softe. Comfrey and Allantoine to promote cell formation and tissue growth, smooth roughness. Plus Carrot Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, and more.
Martha Hill Skin Care formulas contain no animal fats or by-products, synthetic hormones, or harsh preservatives. They are non=toxic, even if swallowed by a child. Ideal for sensitive skin, they will gently cleanse, protect and nourish... eliminate rough, discolored patches... regulate moisture balance... prevent drying and premature wrinkling.

traffic is heavy and on-street parking virtually nonexistent. If business takes you away from the major office towers clustered near the corner of King and Bay streets, you'll find that cabs can be hailed anywhere and that the subway is efficient, easily mastered, clean, and safe (day or night). Maps are available from Metropolitan Toronto Convention and Visitors Association (979-3143), which maintains five visitor information booths around the city in the summer and a permanent kiosk outside the Eaton Centre.
Rent a car only if you're staying in the suburbs or planning to commute regularly to suburban destinations not on a subway line. When driving, watch out for streetcars unloading passengers and for crosswalks where pedestrians have the right of way. Gasoline is sold by the liter (3.8 liters is one U.S. gallon) and speed limits are in kilometers (the usual speed limit is 50 km/h or 30 mph).

TORONTO HOTELS

Prices are in Canadian dollars, equal to 81 U.S. cents at publication.

Four Seasons. A modern luxury hotel in Yorkville, with a health club that offers exercise programs on video, weight machines, a whirlpool, a sauna, and an indoor/outdoor pool. 21 Avenue Road near Bloor Street. (416) 964-0411. Singles: $125-$135. Suites start at $225.
King Edward. An old hotel, recently resorted to its original splendor by the British Trusthouse Forte chain. Its location is ideal--just steps away from Toronto's office towers and O'Keefe Centre. A British high tea, complete with watercress sandwiches, scones, and Devonshire cream, is served every afternoon at 3:00. 37 King Street East. (416) 863-9700. Singles $98-$155. Suites: $220-$350.
Royal York. This 1,600-room hotel is directly connected by underground walkways to the train station, subway, and sublevel shops, and to Toronto's four big office complexes: Royal Bank Plaza, Commerce Court, Toronto Dominion Centre, and First Canadian Place. Guests may use the gym and squash courts at First Canadian Place. The Imperial Room is Toronto's top nightclub. 100 Front Street West. (416) 368-1511. Singles: $88-$106. Suites: $150 and up.
Sutton Place. This recently renovated luxury hotel provides complimentary morning limousine service that whisks guests to the nearby business district in style. Rooms feature original paintings and antique furniture. Health facilities include aerobics classes and a swimming pool, sauna, and jacuzzi. The wine cellar at Sanssouci offers a good selection of half bottles. 955 Bay Street. (416) 924-9221. Singles: $104-$118. Suites: $135-$700.
Windsor Arms. An intimate, 82-room hotel in Yorkville, near Toronto's best stores. Its rooms are custom-furnished, and the staff makes a point of remembering guests' names. The Courtyard Café, Three Small Rooms, and Club 22 are popular with locals. 22 St. Thomas Street near Bloor. (416) 979-2341. Singles: $65-$120. Suites: $140-$275.

TORONTO RESTAURANTS

Prices (in Canadian dollars) are for dinner for two with wine.

Anesty's. Toronto's downtown restaurants tend to feature either fast food or formal dining, but this bright and airy Greek dining room falls happily in between. There's an open fire on cold winter days and Greek belly dancing all year round. Recommended entrées include moussaka and roast lamb. $50. 16 Church Street. 368-1881.
Bangkok Garden. The chef comes from Thailand, as do the teak paneling, table-ware, and many of the ingredients in the house specialties. Satay - thin, grilled slices of meat dipped in peanut sauce - makes a nice starter. Main dished include lime-and-ginger squid and Boxing Stadi-um chicken accompanied by a hot-sweet tamarind sauce. $50 (including beer). 18 Elm Street. 977-6748.
Napoleon. Many consider this Toronto's best restaurant. One reason: The chef, Christian Vinassac, is also the owner and when he's not in the kitchen, he's in the dining room consulting with customers. His marinara mussels are justly ac-claimed. Try boned stuffed pheasant or toast duck marinated in walnut sauce. $100. 79 Grenville Street, near Bay. 929-5938.
Il Posto. One of Toronto's most popular Italian restaurants; reservations are necessary. The atmosphere is warm and so-phisticated and the food is beautifully prepared. Pasta and fresh fish are fea-tured. Save room for something from the dessert table. $64. 148 Yorkville Avenue (in York Square). 968-0469.
Pink Pearl. Among the best of Toronto's 500 Chinese restaurants. Chinese-food mavens rave about the stuffed crab claws and Peking supreme fillet of beef. $35. 142 Dundas Street West. 977-3388.
Strand Dinner Theatre and Restaurant. The atmosphere and food here (specialties are beef Wellington and mixed grill) are reminiscent of a British club, and the widely spaced tables make it a good choice for business lunches. $65. 77 Adelaide Street West. 368-2761.
