PAGE 16 PALISADIAN-POST JUNE 3, 2004 [[image]] Ray Roberts' "Springtime, Point Lobos" Schomburg Shows California Landscapes "California Landscapes" is the subject of the current exhibition of oil paintings at the Schomburg Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. The featured artists are Ray Roberts, Charles Muench, Frank Serrano, Lynn Gertenbach, Saim Caglayan and Peggi Kroll-Roberts. Ray Roberts is "fond of capturing what remains of the magnificent, vanishing landscapes across the Golden State." He and his wife, artist Peggi Kroll-Roberts, live with their three children on a small ranch in Northern California and create their paintings "en plein air." Charles Muench is an artist living in the small fishing village of Markleeville in California's Eastern Sierras. The artist states as his goal: "In putting pigment on canvas, I strive for the same honesty and trueness of a Johnny Cash song." California native Frank Serrano travels widely throughout North America painting scenes as diverse as the southwest desert to the high country vistas of the Canadian Rockies. Serrano states that "painting on location enriches my life...and the paintings do not exist as mere pictures, but as a journal through which I can express all of my senses." Lynn Gertenbach's strong figurative work in serene and pastoral settings has long been her signature style. She finds her muse along the dramatic California coast near her Calabasas home with surf-pounded beaches, grassy wetlands and sky-reflecting lakes as her favorite themes. Saim Caglayan, born in Istanbul, Turkey, came to the U.S. in 1968. He has been creating plein air paintings of the California desert and coastline as well as the Hawaiian islands for many years. The show continues through July 7. Contact: 453-5757. On a recent Saturday night my friend and I took the trip down Sunset to see what this pair had come up with. The restaurant is designed to evoke the era of Hollywood past. The name, Falcon, is a tribute to the Beverly Hills home of Rudolph Valentino, the Falcon Lair. As you might except, the restaurant is smart and sophisticated with a terrific indoor/outdoor concept. At the entry you find yourself looking at the glowing bar and then proceed past raised booths to steps that lead down to the outdoor courtyard with its warming fireplace and couch at one end, and large sheltering tree at the other. A high cream colored retaining wall protects diners from the bustling Sunset traffic. There is also amphitheatre-style seating with pillows to allow the patio area to be used as a screening room or for late night listening to the DJ. Granite-topped tables and black lacquer chairs are in keeping with the sleek contemporary look of the restaurant's design. The concept is to make both diners and nightclub patrons feel comfortable and at home. Thus the menu runs the gamut from contemporary upscale dishes to meatloaf and pizzas. Best of all, the food is excellent. While we studied the menu, warm and nicely textured French rolls made for fine nibbling with the olive tapenade and sweet butter. [[ad]] POST TASTE Grace Hiney Pam-seared fresh scallops with a Maui onion salsa and pea shoot tendrils not only looked beautiful but had beautiful flavor. Golden beet carpaccio consisted of an array of thinly sliced sweet golden beets with greens and aged goat cheese along with toasted hazelnuts for crunch. Both small plate" dishes were delicious. We also sampled the tomato-basil soup of the day made without any dairy. This variety of tomato soup is a favorite of mine and this, with its rich tomato flavor, was splendid. Colorado grilled lamb chops are prepared each with different seasonings and accompanied with mashed potatoes and broccolini. Charred Hawaiian ahi tuna with a sesame-ginger vinaigrette sauce came with sauteed spinach and mushrooms. Here, you can dine on the beet carpacchio ($10) and a pizza for $11 or $12, or enjoy a Filet Mignon for $29. Fusilli with grilled vegetables and homemade marinara sauce is only $14, and meatloaf with vegetables, mashed potatoes and gravy is $16. Specialty cocktails range from $8 to $10, meaning that you can dine here for a lot or a little, as you wish. Executive Chef, Walter Catillo has had an interesting career since arriving in Los Angeles, where he has worked with a number of top ranked chefs, the last of which was Michael Cimerusti at LA's Water Grill. He has learned well and deserves kudos for his cuisine at Falcon. His desserts, too, are special. Molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream comes with a pistachio brittle that gives this rich cake distinction. A seasonal mixed-fruit cobbler with a walnut oatmeal crust and vanilla ice cream was outstanding. The DJ began to play around 9:30, but the music was not intrusive, but pleasant to listen to. Service was professional and helpful as was the advice of sommelier Trey Wilson as to wines to accompany our meal. He invites patrons to attend the Friday, June 4 wine tasting from 7 to 9 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be complimentary. Falcon is open for dinner every day from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. There is valet and street parking. WINE DINNERS On Monday, June 7 at 7 p.m. Chef Lorenzo will serve a five-course menu of international favorite at THE HIDDEN CAFE with wines from select vineyards to accompany each dish. Diane Elder will provide live entertainment. The cost is $68 plus tax and gratuity. The Hidden Cafe is located at 1515 Palisades Drive in the Highlands. For reservations call 230-9823. On Wednesday, June 8, there will be a five-course gourmet wine dinner at SAM'S BY THE BEACH featuring wines from the Davis Bynum Winery in Healdsburg. Palisadian Peter Kerr will discuss the key elements of wine tasting, appreciation and wine/food pairing. Special guest Winemaker David Georges will make a rare Southern California appearance and provide an "insiders" perspective on this 30+ year-old Sonoma County legend. Advance reservations are required as seating will be limited. Price for this event is $79 per person inclusive of tax and tip. Sam's by the Beach is located at 108 West Channel Road in Santa Monica Canyon. The phone number for reservations is 230-9100.
