National meeting of black
women architects planned
for Dec. 3, Washington 

Accomplishments by minority women
in architecture and related fields will be
recognized at a national conference,
"Minority Women in Architecture: A
Sense of Achievement," cosponsored by
the American Institute of Architects and
Howard University's School of Architec-
ture and Planning, Dec. 3 at Howard Uni-
versity, Washington DC.

The first formal national gathering of
black women architects will feature pre-
sentations on professional development
and opportunities for success. The wide
range of topics includes the myth of
superwoman, how to market design skills, 
career options, networking and learning
to negotiate.

Norma Merrick Sklarek, FAIA, vice
president of Welton Becket & Assocs., Los
Angeles, will deliver the conference's
keynote address. Ms Sklarek is the first
black woman architect elevated to fel-
lowship in the Institute. A graduate of 
Columbia University's School of Archi-
tecture, she has worked at Skidmore, Ow-
ings & Merrill and taught at New York
City Community College and the Univer-
sity of California at Los Angeles.

Other speakers at the conference in-
clude Joan Maynard, executive director
of Weeksville Historical Society, Brook-
lyn, NY, who will discuss community de-
velopment and preservation; Marguerite
Villeco, contributing editor to Architec-
ture, who will talk about architectural
journalism; Darwinna Neal, president-
elect of the American Society of Land-
scape Architects, who will give a presen-
tation on landscape architecture; and
Yina Moore, former assistant director of 
the AIA's education programs, who will 
discuss the art of selecting a mentor.

Dianna Peeples, architectural de-
signer, Grad Assocs., Newark, NJ; Ozie
R.M. Quarterman, design division, Veter-
ans Administration, Washington, DC; and 
Laura Erickson, a designer with Harry
Weese & Assocs., Washington, DC, will
