Dear Lorser,

Forgive this delay. I should have acknowledged your note much before this; however, for the past three weeks our time has not been our own : there were the Holidays, the 'aftermath' of the Holidays, several trips out of town, and a three-week visit by my Mother, which was preoccupation all its own. Add to the foregoing, the sumptuous activities of our two young children on an hourly basis and you might see how we let days grow into weeks around this household. But I am sorry, all the same.

Regarding the County directorship, I did have what I took to be a warm and rather encouraging reply from Edward Carter, so much that I must have made his acquaintance some place, though he did not indicate this, nor could I recall any such occasion. In any event, he referred to my letter as "a most pleasant one". And he went on to say that when Chancellor Murphy of UCLA and his committee appointed to select the director could be sure that my letter would be "on the top of the pile"!
