Caravaggio died in misery at the age of 36 - His life was crowded with passionate episodes - [[strikethrough]] episodes [[/strikethrough]] adventures of all kinds: duels, imprisonment, flights, etc.

His rough, energetic nature, made him flee from worldly considerations, and even the tyranny of cultured - people. He actively disliked admiration! and was instinctively on guard against people who flattered him.

Caravaggio claimed to be self-taught. In his [[strikethrough]] p [[/strikethrough]] obsession for extreme-realism, he expressed his contempt for tradition and academic authority.

He believed in painting directly from the model, unhampered by any school-standards.
