Caravaggio - (Michelangelo Amerighi da)
Painter of the Roman School.

Born in Caravaggio, near Milan-? ( [[strikethrough]] 1569 [[/strikethrough]] 1573-1609

He aimed at realism, & violent naturalism, in reaction against the pompous and wearisome style of the "Mannerists" which then flourished & made such artists as the Cavaliere d'Arpino & Federigo Zuccaro successful. His passionate, fantastic nature, aimed at tragic, gloomy effects, & he spent his life combating the cold Bolognese school.

Son of a mason, he went to Milan to learn painting, but we do not know who was his master (?) (Peterzano!).

In Venice, he studies Giorgione, Titian & Veronese. Then he went to Rome where Michelangelo's "Pieta" won his greatest admiration. There he experienced great poverty, but also began to be successful in his large pictures of sacred subjects.
