This practice involves the necessity of employing thick masses of paint, whatever be the Colour of the Canvass, &, therefore, incurs the risk of variation from the outline, because of the necessity to melt it into the surrounding parts; else the edges are sharp & unnatural.  Yet it is good for the Artist sometimes to try how much he can execute at once, being aware of its defects, especially in a rapid study from nature.
