and deficient in the appearance of that elasticity which is most attractive in perfect health.
The best specimens of Flesh in the pictures of Titian, Ruben's, Rembrandt, Vandyoke, being good imitations of Nature, appear to have proceeded from the same pencil, notwithstanding the diversity of their styles of painting, in their less happy, though more characteristic works; because artists are more distinguishable by their peculiarities and defects than their excellences. *

The most brilliant Carnation tints are made with Holland or French Vermillion & white - the addition of Chinese Vermillion & Madder Lake gives them the clearest Roseate hues. Venetian Red & White are less brilliant and, for some complexions, more natural; but light Red is often preferred for general use, as it can be varied and improved by teh addition of Vermillion & Lake. These Reds, unmixed, may serve in some parts for the colour of the shadow, for instance about the nostrils, but they require the uncertain mixture of blacks, browns & Blues to modify them for the various tones of other shades & shadows - consequently are apt to be made too black, too brown, or too blue; it is therefore desireable to possess a Palette composed of Pigments that will serve equally well to mould out, & work up into form the features of every hue, and, with slight variations in the finish, to imitate the peculiarities & beauties of every complexion.
After countless experiments in colouring from mature & in copying the Pictures of Tilsan, Pubens, Vandyoke, Guirdo, Covrigis, Reynolds and Grentze, I think I am authorized to recommend for its simplicity & efficacy, the following Palette.
