Dear Mr. Fried:

I have just heard from Robert Carlen, and my face is indeed very red since I do recall his having mentioned your name and the fact that you owned a small but superb painting by Horace Pippin. What happened to the note about this while I was reseraching the whereabouts of Pippin's works is beyond me. At any rate, Mr. Carlen has called my attention to it again and I am sorry it is too late for us to request it, since Our catalogue is now in the hands of the printer. I would have liked very much to include your painting. I have been uneasy about several in the show, and those suggested by Mr. Carlen have represented the very best of Pippin's work.

Please accept this letter as an apology for an oversight which is indeed a loss to the exhibition.

Sincerely yours,
Associate Director
