Sawyer, III, Esquire Drinker Biddle & Reath 1100 Philadelphia National Bank Bldg. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107 Dear Mr. Sawyer: Mr. Robert Carlen, President of Carlen Galleries, had discussed with me as his attorney your letter of December 21, 1971 regarding the belated claim of Mr. Wade to two sketches and an oil by Horace Pippin. Mr. Carlen informs me that the sketches from Pippin's so-called "War Diary" were given to Mr. Carlen by Mr. Pippin several years before Mr. Pippin's death and were not the property of your client. The Marian Anderson oil, framed oval was sold by Mr. Carlen shortly after Mr. Pippin's death for $100.00, and the proceeds were credited against the $500.00 advanced by Mr. Carlen to Mr. Wade and as an offset to claims which Mr. Carlen had against Mr. Pippin's estate for monies expended by Mr. Carlen on Mr. Pippin's behalf. Very truly yours, RAWLE & HENDERSON WCM:sh By: Warrin C. Meyers cc: Mr. Robert Carlen
