Mr. Laughlin Phillips
The Phillips Collection
1600 21 Street NW
Washington, D.C. 20009

Dear Laughlin:

I am sorry this letter has been so long coming but with the opening of the new gallery and the trip to Philadelphia to see the Grossman Pippins things got a bit behind.

Your extreme hospitality and quiet strength eased my difficult situation regarding the Pippin show. When I opened my apartment door and heard the good news it was a bit emotional for me. I usually am quite contained but I had set my heart on this exhibition and committed myself to the Schomburg group so you can imagine how much it all meant to me.
I went to see Mr. Grossman in Philadelphia last Sunday and found his Pippins of very high quality and he and his wife extremely cordial. I do think, however, that it will be necessary for Jim to make a trip to visit them as they have a great deal of pride in their collection and are interested that the Phillips is a part of this endeavor. I will be happy to visit any of the other owners with or without Jim but feel that it is your collection's name that will allow the public the privilege of seeing this exhibition. We will continue to follow any suggestions you have and if there are any questions please do not hesitate to write or call. I am enclosing a xerox copy of Mr. Milano's letter to me and I really think things will be very much in line so that we may count on the dates that we have set.

Looking forward to seeing you in New York and I hope to meet your charming wife. Perhaps we can spend an evening together.

Again thanks.

Sincerely,

Terry
