Sophia Daniel aged forty two Widow of James Daniels a freedman makes the following statement that she and her husband were living on the plantation of Mr Henry Orr about seven miles from Franklin in Heard Co, James Daniels was working on Mr Orrs farm for a portion of the Crop. He had labored there until the crops had been laid by. He & Mr Orr had got along well together. No trouble, No disagreement had occurred between them. On Saturday night between 9 & 10 oclock Sophia was lying in bed sick & James was lying down on the floor before the fire when some one approached the house within a distance of ten steps and called "Jim" (that is James Daniel) he did not answer & the call was repeated once or twice. Jim then answered & opened the door. He asked what they wanted with him & the person who called said "Come here I want to see you a few minutes" Sophia begged him not to go but he went out in the yard where he was shot having seven balls fired into him

Sophia at the report of the firing jumped out of bed, ran to the door, and saw four men, two in the yard, & two outside the fence. The moon was shining brightly & she distinctly recognized one of the men - Anderson Couch - he lives four or five miles
