Mr. Downs, and George Shipley. and Andrew Herrman tried to get him away; The negroes hallood "come on, we are ready for you; hallood "rally", and did so; fired pistols as they came at the whites; witness saw the negroes fire, but can not tell how many shots were fired; the whites did runn a few steps and returned shots; I could not identify who shot on account of the darkness.

Witness saw a colored man with the name of Jacob Walters, who lives at Ben Bentzer's place, having a club in his hands, leading the colored people to the riot.
