Baltimore, Md. Sept. 20, 1866
I was at the Camp meeting at Shipleys Woods Thursday Aug. 30, 1866. Sometime in the evening, I saw three white men shooting among the negroes then I walked a little further around and heard an old gentleman ask the colored folks - "if you had to fight what would you fight with" - they said guns, knives, pistols and sword if necessary - and by that one of the young white men struck one of the blacks with a big club. The young man with me said we had better move, there will be a general spree here directly - we had hardly got up to where the white folks alter was - before a young white man fired a shot at the negroes.
I saw two other white men take out pistols. I then left that part of the ground - we then went up to wake Mr. A.G. Stewart, then went up to wake Mr. M. Stewart, by this time there was a general riot. I saw a large man with a gray suit of cloths on. - I don't know his name - standing by the road, and heard him tell the people to go home and get their guns and hunt the damn niggers down.
