Sept. 20', 1866.
I was at the Camp meeting at the Shipley woods Aug. 30', 1866. I arrived on the Camp ground about 5 o' clock in the afternoon. About 6 o'clock I went where the colored persons were having their meeting. I had been standing there about half an hour when I saw two drunken white men holloaring at the blacks, and during prayer was mocking the colored man at prayer - when the prayer was over I saw about 12 of the blacks leave the meeting and go into the woods - after a while several of them came back with clubs in their hands; Shortly after this I left the colored camp and did not return. About 1/2 past 11 o' clock that night I went down where the whites were holding prayer meeting and after standing there about 15 minutes the firing commenced. I did not see who commenced the firing but know that the shots came from the rear of the preacher stand - then I left - towards morning I went down to where the rioters were burning the things
