Baltimore, Md. Sept 20, 1866

I was at the camp meeting at Shipley Wood on the 30 of Aug. 1866, about 12 oclock at night. While engaged in prayer, I heard the firing of pistols and yells in the rear of the preachers stand - next saw men retreating into the alter with uplifted clubs, and firing pistols. Next saw a party with clubs striking at a colored man in the alter with club, crying kill the son of a bitch, kill him - afterwards saw white men going to and fro within the circle, calling upon men to fall in - fall in - these men had clubs in their hands. I saw not more than three colored persons near the preachers stand.

I heard one man say - his name was Jenkins - that he had been doing all he could, and I have been all around to the tents and called upon the people to join him, and if they had done so they would have cleaned out the niggers, as they have not done so and if the niggers return and kill them all, it will be their fault. I saw the rioters burning the goods of the colored people. Do not know who fired the first shot.

Saw a man by the name of Jno. Cooling - with a club among the rioters.
