Rec'd Nov 16, 1866

Office A. Com'r Bureau R.F. & A.L.
Augusta, Ga., Sept. 10th 1866.

Respectfully forwarded to Maj. Gen. Howard Com'r.

The Estate of the late Thomas Butler King, within referred to, was, in compliance with Gen'l Sherman's Special Field Order, surveyed and set apart to Freedmen - to whom, however, no certificates of possession were given, owing to some neglect of Gen'l Saxton's Head Quarters. Last winter, the undersigned succeeded in making a mutually satisfactory arrangement between the heirs of said Estate represented by Capt. Mallory P. King, and the freedpeople - by which the most valuable cotton growing lands belonging to this Estate were restored to the heirs, and were afterwards rented by them for this year for $1500 - The remaining portion of the Estate, together with the dwelling house and nearly all the outbuildings, were retained for the use of the freedmen having claims as stated, and as quarters for the Civil Agent Mr. Eaton. For the use, this year, of the portion of the Estate thus retained, the heirs are doubtless justly entitled to compensation; and, if the Com'r is authorized to afford relief, the undersigned would respectfully recommend that it be done in this case. The Estate referred to is the only one situated, as before described, on the coast of Georgia.
