Summer-Address: "Birchhill" R. F. D. 1, Franconia, N. H. Smith August 6, 1961 Dear David, I have your letter of July 30th. Ever since we started working together, we have been discussing the basis of our relationship - at times you came near agreeing with my ideas, then again you changed your mind and also your present letter shows that we donot agree. Any human or business relationship is a "two way street", it is a give and take - it cannot favor only one of the partners. I believe in you and in your sculpture and want to handle it. I have shown my confidence by investing in and buying your sculpture. I would have done this on a much larger scale if we had a better working agreement. Your and my interests are identical, we should work closely together. Naturally, I do not like it when you work with other dealers and create competition to my efforts. I told you, I did not mind Everett Elin selling your sculpture in Los Angeles. But I am upset when he gets a set of photographs of your new work (before we have them) and travels aroudn and shows them to my clients in St. Louis, Dallas, Fort Worth etc. I would have at least expected that you give us the photos at the time.- Naturally, I will do everything to make your exhibition in October a big success, and I want to be sure that I can count on your full support.- On August 1st, we sent a statement to Mrs. Merchel, reminding her of the payments over-due. So far, we only received $2,000.- which we paid you. I am glad that you have such a wonderful time with the children - they no doubt adore swimming, horseback riding and all the excitement. Best, also from Ilse, as ever, Mr. David Smith Bolton Landing, N.Y. [otto Gerson]
