Mrs W.J. Glackens
Dear Madam:-
I am making long distance plans for the educational work of the Foundation and two of the ideas I have in mind are to write small books on two American painters, W. Glackens + M. Prendergast. If you should happen to know either of them sufficiently well to attain from them or members of their families, published criticisms of their work, I should be glad to receive such articles.
I never knew a N.Y. critic who had even the slightest conception of the principles of art but even fools sometimes accidentally say something suggestive; for that reason published criticisms are worthy of examination.
I know what is in my head about those painters + if I can put it on paper I think perhaps intelligent people will sit up + take notice of what they have overlooked. The books will be illustrated - very much so - and they will be published by the Barnes Foundation who have been asked by various important universities + municipal art galleries to provide an educational plan in modern art. We shall do it.
Very respectfully
A C Barnes
