In behalf of the photographer, let us first dismiss the term folk-art. Photography [[strikethrough]] is a very highly developed, most sophisticated medium [[/strikethrough]] as a medium is both highly developed and keenly sophisticated, both qualities [[strikethrough]] being [[/strikethrough]] opposite to the ernest awkwardness and simplicity of folk-art.

The photographer does not aspire to [[strikethrough]] " [[/strikethrough]] replace the painter [[strikethrough]] " [[/strikethrough]] (that"nudging question"which so disturbs your reviewer.) he is much too busy taking photographs and besides he has too much respect for his own profession. A basic attitude in the practice of any art- writing, music-making, painting, sculpture or photography is a recognition and use of the limitations of the medium; [[strikethrough]] the truly able artist always exploits such limitations. [[/strikethrough]]

I feel that the ultimate status of painting is necessarily greater than that of photography not because the one is responsible and the other irresponsible, but simply because painting [[strikethrough]] can contain a fuller much expression of the person is plastic and [[strikethrough]] may contain a much fuller expression of the artist's own capacities than may photography.

[[strikethrough]] As to Mrs Sari Saarinen's unfortunate fire As to Mrs. Saarinen's un [[/strikethrough]]

But let us also note that it is [[strikethrough]] no small wonder [[/strikethrough]] not [[strikethrough]] too [[/strikethrough]] at all surprising that the public has reacted to the Steichen show with such undivided enthusiasm. The reason is, I am sure, that the public itself is [[strikethrough]] hungry [[left margin]] eager [[/strikethrough]] impatient [[/left margin]] for some some exercise of its faculties; it is hungry for thinking, for feeling, for real experience; it is eager for new philosophical outlook, new kinds of truth; it wants [[strikethrough]] to grow [[/strikethrough]] contact with live minds; it wants to feel compassion; it wants to grow emotionally and intellectually; it wants to live.

[[strikethrough]] If art has walked out on its ancient and honorable role of providing such food experience [[/strikethrough]]

All this [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] is provided superbly by the Steichen show [[strikethrough]] mainly [[/strikethrough]] and that is mainly because it has dared to trespass into all areas of experience
