Dear Jody,
I am in the process of writing a Visual Memoir, which I thought, might be of interest to you. Several years ago, your positive response to my journal proposal was very encouraging and your comments and suggestions were taken to heart.
Starting at eleven years old. I began keeping a diary and each day begin with the words, "Dear Diary". Over time the diaries became a sketchbook, collages, and memoirs. Today the total number of books is ninety-five.
As a child growing up in Arizona with two brothers and sisters, I have written about the events that influenced me to become a visual artist. Our family was fragmented emotional neglected and rag tagged. We were joined together by our mother, but only in the margins of her life. My mother drove, we were along for the ride and the car doors were never locked. Riding through emotional territory of a family lost became the events that laid the foundation for my artwork.
The memoir begins in the early 50's and will continue to the mid 60's. At nineteen I became pregnant and returned to my grandmothers house for emotional support. When I arrived, she was away visiting my uncle and I spent the weekend alone. The memoir explores the questions of how creativity and a sense of self can be found in a family where there is poverty, ignorance and grief.
I envision this book to be a coming of age story told in the manner of a visual memoir journal. I think it will be a unique approach in the marketplace and I hope you are as excited about the project as I am.
I have included several items in this package and they are: a book comp and a copy of the first chapter. I wanted to illustrate the possibilities for the book. I have also included a self address stamped envelope to return the book.
I look forward to your feedback and I will contact you in a couple of weeks to hear your comments.
