WILLIAM H. JOHNSON (1901-    ) is perhaps one of America's most important Negro artists. Born in Florence, South Carolina, Johnson received his formal art education at the National Academy of Design in New York City. In 1926 friends sent him to Europe where he studied in Paris and also worked in Denmark and North Africa. Johnson said that he learned the most from the philosophies of the Danish and Arab peoples. William H. Johnson is now in a mental hospital, a victam of incurable insanity.
