From the manner in which the report was made I was led to believe it was of very recent occurrence.  I at once dispatched my Asst. Insp'r General to the spot to investigate the affair and also the numerous reported outrages committed on freedmen. It was then ascertained that the man was hung in June, 1865, two years previous, and that the parties committing the deed had fled the Country. I had them traced one to Columbus Miss, thence to Arkansas and three to Texas; the others could not be traced.
