Acknowledges receipt of letter of the 10th inst. with copy of petition purporting to come from the freedpeople of Edisto Island. States that he will go down to the Island and correct any wrong impressions that may exist. The only persons annoyed at the interference in the sale of cotton, are a set of white men who are on the Island for the purpose of trading with the people and a colored man named Henry Brahan who made quite a fortune last year, buying the cotton of the colored people at half its value. |
