Pearce detained at Fayetteville NC. States that his young daughter Sophia H Pearce is violently detained at Fayetteville NC by rebel relatives. That he has forwarded her transportation to Washington and repeatedly written for her.  Asks interposition of Government.  Referred to Gen'l Sickles & returned with report of Justin Hodges Agent of Freedmen's Bureau at Fayetteville from which it appears that the little girl in question is with her mother at Fayetteville and is attending school. that Mrs. Pearce is anxious to proceed to Washington with her 2 children & join her husband & having the required transportation is only awaiting for sufficient money from him to subsist them on their way & to procure suitable clothing thinks $30 is sufficient has only received $5 from him which is inadequate.  It appears that the charge of detention is unfounded. |
