Statement : by J. H. Alston (col'd) Tuskegee Ala.

Many colored people in the vicinity of Tuskegee have rented land (from 10 to 30 acres each) He, Alston, being considered a leader of the Freedmen, has received a letter signed "K.K.K Dept. No "2" " - ordering him to notify the colored people to leave their rented places, on pain of death. Further states, that freed people have been assaulted without provocation - and that he has been threatened with violence on several occasions, any many others have also been threatened.

Many freed people are leaving that section through fear of violence and persecution, and believes that unless they have better protection from the Government, the lives of colored men will not be secure.
