Gen. O.O Howard:
Dear Sir,
I herewith transmit papers respecting Maryville College.
I trust they are full and explicit, and may meet with your approbation. Any help you can render us, will be most gratefully received, for we are exceedingly limited in means, and have an important work to perform. We now have fifty pupils, mostly promising and doing well. Our quarters are not comfortable, nor have we as many teachers as we need. We have lately added to the faculty Rev. Alx. Bartlett of Ohio, Congregational Minister and graduate of Oberlin College. After having, in the days of Slavery, educated, in this Institution, several Colored men, we are not now likely to commit the folly and wickedness of excluding such from the benefits through
