money they received on final settlement for last year's wages, in debauching, excessive gambling, and drunkenness; whilst they demean themselves in a disrespectful and insolent manner to all around them. many entertain vague and unreasonable ideas, that the Convention, now assembled in this State, will provide them with lands and homes.

many of the freedpeople are easily imbrued with political enthusiasm to such an extent, as to materially interfere with their real interests; spending their money for political clubs, instead of supporting schools for the education of themselves, and their children. It is proper to remark, however, in this connexion that a great many freedpeople throughout the State, take much interest in religious matters, are zealous in their attachment to the various creeds, and regular in their church attendance. The Sabbath is generally observed by the colored people as a day of rest and devotion.
