Visits of School Supt

During the quarter, School Supt. Day, has travelled in the following Counties, inquiring into the general condition of the Colored people, inspecting the Schools, and otherwise making known the objects of the Bureau: Baltimore, Cecil, Caroline, Somerset in Md, and Kent and Sussex in Delaware. Owing to the hard winter, and the necessity of the laboring class, the night schools lessened materially in numbers. 

Independent Schools

The highest number of Independent schools reported during the quarter is 22, with about 900 pupils, some of the private schools are conducted in a superior manner, among others is a Catholic Institution under charge of the Sisters of Providence. This school has been in existence since 1829. In addition to religious education the pupils are taught the English and French languages, Arithmatic, and other common branches, Music, Sewing, and Embroidery of all kinds. The same Society have also opened two free schools, and an Orphan Asylum for colored children:
