Dear Dan,

Thanks for your letter; I hope you didn't take it that the reference to "the writers" meant you at all — what you do in ARTFORUM is quite special and my complaint doesn't extend to it.

I sent a letter to the editor to the Nation complaining about Max Kozloff's attack on me recently and found out what a generous editor I am. They slashed my letter to ribbons, left it an inocuous whine instead of a really solid combination of lefts to the ribs and head followed by a lulu of a right cross, and without so much as a note asking if it were OK.

Hooray about the article you are planning. For September? Deadline July 15. Oh Dan, what are we to do? It happens that willy-nilly, for better or worse, I get paid to decide what goes into this magazine and what doesn't, so that you have no choice to "abide by" my decisions (or "editorial instincts") or not. If I decide that the letters controversy between us has gone far enough, then its either a bad or unfair or good decision, but that has to be the end of it, or at least it has to be the end of it if I hear you out and still decide to cut it off, very much as its finally you who decides which light goes where on the wall, regardless of the way the gallery owner or the museum director might (in all good faith) feel about it. (Well, maybe not"very much" that way, but something that way. One of the ways its that way is that you are not called
