upon to have to explain why the green light should be here and not there -- it is enough that you feel you want it there, and the demand thatt you have a verbalized series of reasons for each move is an intolerable one. That's why I sometimes duck behind a phrase like "editorial instinct." Many times I simply feel "this and not that," "here and not there," and feel it strongly enough to stick by it. That was certainly the case with the idea of continuing our letter discussion, but not so much the case with the Guggenheim thing, which [[strikethrough]] your [[/strikethrough]] talking to you about made me want to consider further. Now, with your Betay Kake thing, that is precluded as well[[strikethrough]], of course.)
We have never had any difficulties over what is to be printed and what is not to be printed in your articles, thank heaven, and I dread the day that such an issue might arise. Even Harold Rosenberg, yet.
The decision to come to New York was as much mine as anyone's: that one was not a wrong one - it's simply that I dont think I've taken enough advantage of the move here. I know virtually no one now I didn't know before, and find my inability to move out into the art world a serious hindrance to the magazine. But I have good hopes for next year: for one thing, certain issues seem to be rising to the surface in the art world that will probably concern the magazine greatly over the next year or so, and many of the writers will be [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] doing more work next year. Coming out irregularly or less frequently is no solution; the assumption there is that indifferent material that is needed simly to fill the magazine each monthis the trouble. But its not.
