There's no state, there is no area of work, there is no parcel of existence in this country where a Negro has free range to move to his heights, and there are Negroes hired without any regard for color, or the highest job is offered to him, or anything just as long as he has the ability...it doesn't exist in this country.
...Well, I would say there hasn't been much attempt to get murals in large buildings for any artist, and little or no opportunity for Negro artists. And again, you know, if you check over... and I say in the past, 'cause it's a shame the way this country neglects its art and its artists...there's just no recognition of their artists in this country. When you go to a place like the Scandanavian countries or when you go to Germany, or you go to any of the places in Europe, you see at least more concern by the governments of these places, by the local as well as the federal governments of these places, concern about art and using their arts, and recognizing their artists. This country doesn't recognize its artists. They could care less. You're parasites! So you have an art commission. You have a National Art Commission. We have one in the city here. They're meangless, meaningless things, really...empty gestures culture-wise. The poor countries almost bankrupt culturally, if you really want to examine it.
