Dear Mr. Horowitz:

Thank you for your letter of January 23 concerning the Charles White exhibition. I am herewith informing Mr. Wills that it will not be possible for the exhibition to be sent on to him at Wilberforce. I understand the nature of your letter concerning the conditions made regarding the lenders to the exhibition. I am sorry that we have not been able to return the works prior to this time, but must explain something which has hindered our doing so.

The works arrived at Fisk University in crates that were not possible to use for the return of the exhibition. You will recall that we paid a handsome sum, I think something in the nature of $250.00, as a contribution toward the making of the crates. Each school paid approximately that amount. Now, I must have new crates made in order to return the works to you. This is what is holding up the shipment. I think it is unfair that the crates were not made sturdy enough to complete the entire route, especially since we were charged a rather handsome sum for their construction. I am having to bear this amount from my budget, which was not counted on, and I hope that you will understand that this is the reason why I have not been able to ship the works back to you prior to now.

I am happy to have the listing as to where the works go and I am preparing to see to it that they are properly crated and returned immediately. All-in-all I think that all of the effort and misunderstanding that have gone into the preparation have been worth our having such a fine exhibition and I am very grateful to you and to Mr. White for the fine cooperation that we have received. I do hope that the other schools that have requested the services, including the recent one from Shaw University, will be able to get in touch with you so that you can advise them concerning such an exhibition in the near future.

Very sincerely yours,
