FOREWORD
by Hans van Weeren-Griek

The present, retrospective exhibition of the work of Kenneth Noland follows The Jewish Museum's tradition of exploring the field of contemporary art, as well as art of Judaic interest. It is especially fitting that Noland's work be shown at this time, as he was one of the painters represented in The Jewish Museum's "Toward a New Abstraction" exhibition in 1963, and also one of the eight artists chosen by Dr. Alan R. Solomon, as Director of The Jewish Museum, to represent the United States in the "XXXII International Biennial Exhibition of Art" in Venice in 1964.

The Board of Governors and the Acting Director express their deep gratitude to the many people who have made this exhibition possible; these include the artist, Mr. Kenneth Noland, for his help in the preparation of the exhibition; Mr. Michael Fried for his critical essay introducing the catalogue; Mr. André Emmerich for his valuable assistance; Mr. Lawrence Rubin and Mr. William S. Rubin for the contribution of their special knowledge; Miss Sandra L. Hunt, of the Museum's curatorial staff, for her help with the catalogue and the exhibition.

We should also like to express our gratitude to the following lenders for their generous cooperation: Mr. and Mrs. Jess Cook, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Harry Glasgall, Miss Stephanie Lynn Gordon, Joseph H. Hirshhorn, Mrs. H. Gates Lloyd, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Murchison, Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Netsch, Jr., Mrs. Cornelia Noland, John G. Powers, Paul Scott Rankine, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Wright, friends of the Museum who wished to remain anonymous, the André Emmerich Gallery and Galerie Lawrence.
