Dear Family:

Thank you for your letters, and the picture of Grandma Leonard. It is very good - looks like a portrait by Gilbert Stuart. Laddy Joseph tells me Dad has another article in the New Republic - is that so? I went to the movies with them last night, to see the Trial of Mary Dugan - pretty good. Diego and Frida saw Citizen Kane, and say it is lousey [[lousy]]. I haven't seen it yet, as it is still three pesos. I went to the opening of an exhibit of American artists with Diego the other night - Tom Catlin brought it down as part of the good neighbor pan american stuff. Daniels and all the minor dignitaries were there, including Padilla, whom I met. He is a smoothy of the first water, or as Diego said, he is like one of those snails without a house! I was the exhibitof the evening, in Frida's jewels, Helen'O'Gorman's dress and a hair comb by Benny, who likes em fancy. The exhibition is not so hot, as they could have chosen much more representative and interesting paintings. We went afterward to dinner with the interesting paintings. We went afterward to dinner with the Kauffmans - mamma, papa and Junior, who are rather pleasant people. Orosco and the Covarrurias were there, but we only exchanged pleasantries with Oroszco, as Miguel is sore at Diego because he told the President in front of Miguel that the job he did in New York was lousey [[lousy]].

The mural is not being done yet because he has not yet raised the money, and is not doing any work on the museum at present - the National Palace is being held up for the same reason, so I am continuing easel painting. I have done twelve paintings of various sizes since I've been here.

I had mrs. Sauer and Elizabeth in the day before they left, with Isabel Kelly. Isabel wanted to see the Trascan collection of Diego's, but I had to say it was in Coyoacan and impossible to see, as Diego wont have anything to do with anyone connected with Sauer. He says Tarascan figures are works of art, and all Archeologists are stupid, because if they weren't they wouldn't be archeologists.

I have a parrot all my own now, who talks and sings. His only drawback is that he loves to get in my palette, and I find him covered with Burnt sienna or viridian, with feetmarks all over the place.

Must get to work -

Lots of love,

Emmy lou
